What is driving the data center backlash?

Why do some people hate data centers?

If you listen to the news, you’ll hear a lot of reasons: water waste, noise pollution, landscape disruption, increase tax and electricity costs, etc.

You may also hear why many of these reasons are silly, uneducated protests to the inevitable progress of technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

My opinion: the main metric behind data center backlash is the same main metric driving political polarization and international conflicts… wealth inequality.

Nobody seems to want to hear it (least of all political news networks), but humans measure their worth by relative NOT absolute comparisons. Reliable measures of wealth inequality in the United States are up by 20% to 50% since the 1960’s.

Palma Ratio = Wealth of Top 10% of the population / Wealth of bottom 40% of population
(0.5 means Top 10% wealth HALVES bottom 40%)
(1.0 means Top 10% wealth EQUALS bottom 40%)
(2.0 means Top 10% wealth DOUBLES bottom 40%)

The U.S. Palma ratio was 1.8 in 2024… up by 0.5 to 0.6 (40% to 50%) since the 1960’s.

The U.S. GINI Coefficient was 0.54 before and 0.39 after taxes in 2024… up by 0.14 and 0.7 (35% and 21.8%, respectively) since the 1960’s.

Follow the money…

People who support data centers may directly or indirectly gain money from them. People who hate data centers may directly or indirectly lose money to them.

With data center companies supporting 5.5 million jobs (PwC, 2026) and with 58% of U.S. residents invested in the stock market (Caporal, 2026; Gallup, 2026), there are a lot of people out there who are directly or indirectly benefitting from data centers. Could this be a major reason why don’t hear more consistent criticism of them?

The Missing Nuance: While 58% own stock, wealth concentration inside the market is incredibly skewed. The Motley Fool data cited actually points out that the top 1% of Americans own 50% of all equities, and the top 10% own 87% of all stocks. The bottom 50% of Americans hold just 1% of the market. Therefore, while a majority “benefit” via 401(k)s, the financial windfall of the tech boom is overwhelmingly concentrated at the very top. [1]

So, if 50% to 60% of U.S. residents are making money off of data centers, are 40% to 50% of U.S. residents losing money to data centers? Could this be a major reason why some people hate data centers so much?

What do you think? What is driving the data center backlash? Utility costs? Water consumption? Noise and air pollution? Or, are these complaints signs of a deeper discontent with wealth disparities in the United States?
