On Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan & Cacilda Jethá: Polyamory, Polygamy, Polygyny, Polyandry, & Monogamy

On Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jetha published in two thousand ten:

Christopher Ryan is a researcher with a Doctorate of Philosophy in Psychology and Cacilda Jetha is a Doctor of Psychiatry and Occupational Medicine. In Sex at Dawn they write broadly about human sexuality while citing many authors and researchers. But is this book an antidote to monogamy or sexual repression?

Polyamory can be defined as having consensual concurrent relationships with two or more sexual partners. This typically looks like three or four people all agreeing to have sexual relationships with each other. But unlike open relationships, another partner is not approved or admitted as a sexual partner without the group’s consent.

Polygamy describes having multiple concurrent sexual partners, typically married, of the opposite sex. Polygyny is when a male has multiple concurrent female partners. And Polyandry is when a female has multiple concurrent male partners. Lastly, monogamy is fidelity between two sexual partners.

So, are humans naturally more polyamorous or polygamous or monogamous? Sex at Dawn seems to suggest that most humans are just sexual, and that sexuality includes a wide variety of human behaviors and relationships. As a result, Sex at Dawn has me asking the question, Is this book an antidote to monogamy or sexual repression?
