On Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War era

On Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era by James McPherson published in 2003 copyright 1988:

What is freedom? How do obtain it? And can we keep it?

McPherson is an American Historian. His writing is specific in its detail and comprehensive in its scope. Listening to this Pulitzer Prize winning book at the beginning of the 21st century feels like enlightening omen as the author works through a myriad of actions that coalesced into a civil war.

Nations seem to be composed of groups of individuals with various cultures and desires. Many vicissitudes can easily overwhelm individuals, their groups, and their nation. Every individual, group, and nation will struggle with the uncertainties of life.

Is freedom independence? Is independence of the individual, the nation, or both? Was America free after the Revolutionary War? Are we free now?

Freedom may be more than an outcome. It may be an interdependent behavior that emerges in groups of responsible individuals. If we listen, will we be able to hear the stories of our ancestors? Will we act on the lessons they teach us?

What is freedom? How do obtain it? And can we keep it?
